Volunteering opportunities for teenagers can be found all around South Brunswick High School and the South Brunswick Public Library.
”There are many big volunteering opportunities coming up,” Guidance counselor and club advisor of Viking Volunteers, Anastasia Marcella said. “There’s the spring food drive where volunteers go around to supermarkets to ask for food donations such as canned beans and soup.”
The Viking Volunteers club also offers many volunteering opportunities in school, so it is best to attend the club in order to find out about these events.
”The annual stuffed animal drive is something we do, too,” Ms. Marcella said. “We hold a charity carnival for disabled adults and children and donations can be made there as well.”
She said the annual stuffed animal drive takes place during the spring, as do most of the other activities.
However, the Habitat for Humanity fund is available all throughout the year.
This is a program where teenagers and young adults can come together to build or repair houses for people who otherwise would not have the means.
Although South Brunswick High School has many opportunities, the South Brunswick Public Library also hosts volunteering opportunities now and then.
The library volunteering blog sbplvolunteers.blogspot.com lists the opportunities that are available.
In a post dated Jan. 14 entitled “Jan & Feb Jobs”, volunteering advisor Ms. Saleena Davidson said, “The library is always looking for entries to add to our library blog. You will receive one hour of volunteer time for each article you write, (up to)one article per week. Articles may be on any subject or may be reviews of books/movies/tv/music and should be sent to Ms. Davidson at [email protected].”
This opportunity is available throughout the year and can be completed and sent from home.
It is an easy way to earn hours without committing a whole day to volunteering.
The volunteering blog updates with new opportunities often, so it is best to check it occasionally.
Students at South Brunswick High School volunteer in school and in the public library for various reasons.
”I like to volunteer sometimes because it’s good to do and I get to help out,” Freshman Olivia Hutchison said.
Volunteering can be beneficial to those looking to do something good for others and it also makes a productive pastime.
”Volunteering is important to me because I think it’s important to help others,” Freshman Katie Burke said. “Also, it’s a good experience and can be fun. I do plan on volunteering soon.”
Volunteers say that it is good for the community and it is good for the soul as well. By helping out, volunteering allows everyone to make changes for the better.
