How could a recently orphaned, 10-year old homeless South African boy ever be called Lucky?    Birds, Nesting and Birdhouses is the topic at 10 a.m. at Terhune Orchards, 330 Cold Soil Road (crossroad Carter Road), Lawrence. Birds are getting ready for spring and new families. The program lasts about an hour and includes a story and educational segment. Poet Mary-Kate Heffern, a Lawrenceville resident and retired nurse whose poems have appeared in local publications, will share the poems she grew up with and still remembers. The Dublin murder squad has a grim case to solve in Tana French’s Broken Harbor. Four members of one family have been brutally attacked in their home in an upscale housing development that collapsed along with the real-estate market. There’s a slim chance that Jennifer Spain might survive her injuries, but her husband has died of multiple stab wounds and their two children have been smothered in their beds. Detective Sgt. In his book “The Art of Fiction” John Gardner discusses psychic distance — how close the narrative consciousness is to the character in the story. A first sentence like “Henry J. Warburton had never much cared for snowstorms” sets a different distance than “God, how he hated these damn snowstorms.” Join librarian Donna Wolfe to discuss five degrees of separation for the monthly meeting of this fiction writing group in this encouraging and supportive environment in which to share our writing. Daniel Harris will read from his recently published collection of poems, “Random Unisons,” and from “Loose Parlance” (2008). His poetry has been nominated for a Pushcart award.
