FLORENCE — The Florence Township Fire Department, through its Facebook page, announced that Township Police Chief Alvin Scully has died at age 58.
The post appeared on the department’s Facebook page around 8 p.m. April 6, indicating that Chief Scully had died earlier in the day. Just under an hour later, the Florence Township OEM Facebook page similarly offered its condolences.
Richard A. Brook, township administrator, this morning confirmed Chief Scully had “succumbed to cancer."
”Chief Scully shall always be remembered for the love he had for his wife Amy and his family, his humor, his affection for the community and for the deep dedication he possessed for the men and women who have served and continue to serve in the Florence Township Police Department,” Mr. Brook said in an email.
He added that township and police officials are working on releasing a formal statement.
According to archives, Chief Scully was promoted to chief in February 2013. He began working as the chief law enforcement officer and acting chief in March 2012 after Stephen Fazekas, the previous chief, retired.
Chief Scully, of Florence, was hired by the department in January 1985.
