The Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County holds two f free workshops that will help improve both your garden and your health Saturday, April 12, at the EARTH Center, in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave., South Brunswick.
The “Herb Gardens for Your Yard or Patio” workshop will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Whether it’s for color combinations, culinary and medicinal uses or to enhance fragrances, annual and perennial herbs have long been a part of any serious gardener’s landscape. This workshop will discuss the basics of designing, planting and caring for an herb garden, as well as container gardening and some popular herbs and how to use them. It will be presented by Caren White, a certified Rutgers Master Gardener and a longtime volunteer at Rutgers Gardens and steward for its herb garden.
The “Eating Wise While on the Go: Quick, Healthy Meals and Snacks” workshop will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
Some families are so busy during the workweek that their diets may suffer. This program presented by Susan Stephenson-Martin MS, CD/N, will discuss strategies for families on the go looking to improve their weekly menus. Techniques for smart shopping, easy recipes and preparing meals in advance will be discussed, as well as ways to avoid traps for eating unhealthy due to convenience. Content will be based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 and 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans published by the Federal Department of Health and Human Services.
To register, call 732-398-5262 by April 9. For more information contact the EARTH Center at 732-398-5262.
