EAST WINDSOR — A Bordentown man is facing charges after allegedly grabbing the wheel of a car his wife was driving and causing it to crash March 2, according to police.
Jack Xi Zhu, 43, of Bordentown is charged with aggravated assault, weapons offenses, hindering apprehension, obstructing justice, witness tampering and providing a false police report following an accident on Route 130 near the Route 33 intersection, police said.
According to police, Mr. Zhu was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by his wife, Xinzhu Li, 29, also of Bordentown, on Route 130 south at 7:37 a.m., police said.
When police arrived on the scene, they found the vehicle on its side after striking a tree on the passenger side and rolling over.
Mr. Zhu and his wife initially told police that Mr. Zhu had grabbed the wheel when an animal entered the roadway, causing his wife to lose control of the car, police said.
Police issued him a summons for reckless driving and then transported the couple to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in Hamilton for the treatment of minor injuries.
A further investigation by police later in the day determined that Mr. Zhu deliberately caused the crash by grabbing the steering wheel during an argument with his wife, police said.
He then allegedly told his wife to lie to police about the animal in the road, police said.
Mr. Zhu was arrested in Bordentown and is being detained at East Windsor Police Headquarters on $50,000 bail pending a bail post or commitment to the Mercer County Detention center, police said.
