HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP: Church damaged in early morning fire

The Princeton Community Church, at the corner of Pennington Road and Brandon Road West in Hopewell Township suffered fire damage to a small portion of the roof on Saturday at about 1:45 a.m.

   The Princeton Community Church, at the corner of Pennington Road and Brandon Road West in Hopewell Township suffered fire damage to a small portion of the roof, as well as interior heat, smoke and water damage to a small area located within the main worship area of the church after flames spread from a nearby shed fire on Saturday at about 1:45 a.m.
   The fire was called in by a passing driver who was traveling along Interstate 95.
   The Hopewell Township Police Department, along with the Pennington Fire Department, responded to the church and found a detached shed, approximately 15 feet by 15 feet, engulfed in flames.
   The flames from the shed then spread up to the roof of the church, located above the main worship area of the church.
   Firefighters kept the fire contained to a small area of the roof. The church was unoccupied at the time and there were no reported injuries.
   The shed, used for storage, was destroyed.
   The Pennington Fire Company, under the command of Chief James Deforte, along with the Hopewell Fire Department, the Union Fire Department, Lawrenceville Fire Company, Lawrence Road Fire Company, Slackwood Fire Department, Pennington Road Fire Company, West Trenton Fire Department, Prospect Heights Fire Department, and the Princeton Fire Department, extinguished the fire.
   The fire remains under investigation by the Hopewell Township Police Department, Hopewell Valley Emergency Services, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office and the Mercer County Fire Marshal’s Office.
   The Pennington Fire Company was also assisted by the Pennington First Aid Squad and the Hopewell Emergency Medical Unit.
   Brandon Road West was closed during the firefighting operation.
