HAMILTON: Mercer County reopens Sweetbriar bridge

The Mercer County Department of Transportation and Infrastructure has completed the replacement of the bridge, located one-half mile east of Whitehead Road. Work on the project began on Nov. 6, 2013.

HAMILTON — Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes announced the reopening of the bridge on Sweetbriar Avenue over Miry Run in Hamilton Township on April 11.
The Mercer County Department of Transportation and Infrastructure has completed the replacement of the bridge, located one-half mile east of Whitehead Road. Work on the project began on Nov. 6, 2013.
”The harsh winter weather we experienced made this a particularly challenging project, but we made it a top priority and it was completed with minimal delays,” Mr. Hughes said in a county press release. “We appreciate the patience of motorists and residents while this work was being done.”
The previous structure carrying Sweetbriar Avenue (Route 649) over Miry Run was a three span, concrete T-beams supported on concrete piles. The bridge was considered structurally deficient with a sufficiency rating of 30 on a scale of 0 to 100, according to the press release.
The replacement structure is a single span, pre-cast, pre-stressed concrete box beam bridge supported on steel piles and on cast-in-place pile cap substructure. The new bridge has two lanes, two shoulders, one sidewalk and four-rail steel open bridge railing. Cast-in-place concrete approach slabs, sleeper slabs and relief slabs were constructed.
Marbro Inc., of Montclair, was the successful low bidder at $1,437,117. The contract was awarded on Sept. 12, 2013, and was funded through the New Jersey Department of Transportation Division of Local Aid.
