CRANBURY: Woman’s Club offers college seed money

By Nicole M. Wells, Special Writer
CRANBURY — The saying goes that “April showers bring May flowers,” but the Woman’s Club of Cranbury is hoping to help seed and water a different kind of perennial this spring: the college dreams of graduating high school seniors.
To that end, the Woman’s Club of Cranbury is offering two, $2,000 scholarships this year to graduating Cranbury Township seniors who will be entering their first year of post-secondary education in the fall.
”It’s something that we have always felt is very important to support,” club member Debbie Taylor said, referring to higher education.
Students applying for the scholarships must complete an application, which includes a typed essay and personal references, as well as demonstrate a commitment to community involvement.
”We look for people who are very community involved,” Ms. Taylor said.
While many scholarships are based heavily on a student’s grade point average, or GPA, Ms. Taylor said that the Woman’s Club scholarships are not grades-driven, instead focusing on a student’s overall development.
”It’s more important to see how well rounded they are as individuals,” she said.
Proof of acceptance to a post-secondary educational institution is also required as part of the application process.
Applications can be obtained from the guidance department at Princeton High School or downloaded from the club’s website at www.womansclubofcranbury.org. Private school students who live in Cranbury Township are also invited to apply.
Completed applications should be submitted to The Woman’s Club of Cranbury, PO Box 94, Cranbury, NJ 08512 no later than April 30.
For more information, contact Marna McDermott at 609-395-1845 or Debbie Taylor at 609-655-0581.
The Woman’s Club of Cranbury was established in 1898 and has served the community for more than 100 years on local, state and national projects and programs that make a difference in the lives of others, according to the organization’s website.
