EAST WINDSOR: Open space purchase approved

The Township Council approved an ordinance for buying an open space parcel on Airport Road during a recent meeting.
The land will be composed of Block 47, on Lot 14. The space will approximately be 24 acres, according to officials.
Mayor Janice Mironov said the property has be targeted for the past few years.
The town purchased the property for $200,000, which was funded through Mercer County and the state’s Green Acres program, which puts aside funds for open space preservation.
”I think it provides a much more balanced, and healthier land views of the surrounding area for residents and businesses,” said Mayor Mironov. “People are coming to this area because of the green areas that surround.”
She also credits the land with help protecting the area from major storms.
One resident, however, was weary of the decision.
”We don’t need this open space,” said resident Sean O’Connor. “We could have it purchased by someone who could put money to our economy and our tax base to lower the tax rate and spending.”
Mayor Mironov responded by saying preserving open space has always been a priority for her administration.
” It has wetlands and woodlands,” she said. “It’s adjacent to significant residential lots and has been providing a healthier environment for them.”
