HAMILTON — If one were so inclined, he or she could go on at length in regards to the differences between the sports of golf and tennis.
However, there are also similarities between the two athletic endeavors – including the fact that only through hard work, an attention to detail and the willingness to learn from mistakes can someone reach their full potential on the course or on the court.
The positive attributes listed above can also be mentioned when discussing the Nottingham High School golf and tennis programs this spring.
Both programs are relatively young and looking to build toward the future, but the effort that the tennis and golf teams are putting forth right now is considerable.
Todd Shulman, the head coach for the Northstars golf squad, welcomes back three student-athletes with prior varsity experience including junior Devin Tandy and sophomores Dylan Gurgurich and Trevor Gurgurich.
”Devin Tandy is my captain this season,” Shulman said. “I hope he will help guide this very young team to develop good practice and self-evaluation habits.”
Newcomers to the Nottingham golf team this spring include sophmores Cole Marten and Alex Weitzel and freshman Ben Richards.
”We are a very young team, more than half of my golfers picked up a club for the first time this year,” he said. “I hope we can begin to develop a team that will be competitive as time goes on.”
The Nottingham golf team has a match scheduled for Wednesday, April 30 against West Windsor-Plainsboro South at Miry Run Golf Course.
There is also a large amount of youth on the Nottingham boy’s tennis team this year. Senior Evan Burlaga, second singles, and junior Ryan Ciaccio junior, first singles are the only returning players for the Northstars this spring.
”Ryan likes to help out at practice, helping teach the others,” Nottingham head boy’s tennis coach Andrew Pursell said. “The kids look up to Evan as a senior leader. I’d like to see Ryan qualify for the state tourney. Everyone else I am looking for improvement as the year goes on due to our inexperience.”
Newcomers to the lineup this season for Nottingham include senior Brandon Suarez (third singles), sophmores Kajan Boyer (second doubles) and Dave Zuninga (second doubles), and freshmen Rich Herman (first doubles), James Munn (second doubles) and Faiq Siddiqui (first doubles).
On April 30, the Northstars have a home tennis match against Notre Dame.
