Smoking may soon be illegal in township parks.
The Township Committee introduced an ordinance Tuesday night to have smoke-free parks. A public hearing and vote is scheduled for Tuesday, May 27.
In addition to health benefits, it will decrease accidental fires caused by discarded cigarette butts, as well as reduce litter, the committee said in a statement.
The concept was brought forward by the township Municipal Alliance and the Regional Chronic Disease Coalition of Somerset County, through the township’s health department.
The coalition will donate signs to be placed around parks.
Somerset County prohibits smoking in its parks.
