The Manville Library participated in the 18th Annual National Poetry Month on April 22 in the Community Room. Poetry forms discussed were sonnet, lyric, haiku and quatrain.
All poetry winners will receive either a Poetry magazine or spoken word CD for their writing efforts. Some poems may appear in the Manville News. The deadline is Saturday, April 26 at 5:30 p.m.
An Open Poetry reading will be held on Tuesday, April 29, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Community Room. The reading will include adults and children who wrote their winning prize poems on April 22.
If you did not attend the workshops you are still welcome to attend and read one poem in the Open Poetry session. Please sign up with Branch Director Ed Smith for this spring event at (908) 722-9722.
In May, the shredded remains of a popular young adult book will be displayed at the Manville Public Library. Which book is it? If youngsters can figure that out, they could win a $10 gift card to Reading Cinemas.
All teens, grades 5 through 12, are invited to write a guess on an entry form and place it in a special collection box in the library. Guesses will be accepted from May 1 through 31; on June 3 the winner will be announced. If more than one correct guess is submitted, the winner will be chosen at random.
Storytime: We will share a seasonal story, songs, followed by an age-appropriate craft. The sessions will be held from 11 a.m.-noon on Tuesdays in the Community Room. Children must be 3 ½ by August 31, 2013. Registration is required online or at the library.
After-school café: Manville students in grades 5 through 12 are invited to take a study break at the library on Tuesday, May 13. At 3:30 p.m. the teen librarian will serve light snacks and beverages in the Community Room.
Mother’s Day cards: Students in grades 5 through 12 are invited to make a personalized Mother’s Day card and an envelope on Friday, May 9, at 3:30 p.m.The cards can be completed in an hour. They are made with cardstock, ribbons and acrylic jewel decorations, all in a variety of colors. Materials will be provided free of charge.
Card making: Creating handcrafted cards as a service project for patients in nursing homes. Materials will be provided. Open for grade 3 and older and adults. Monday, May 12, from 3:30-4:15 p.m. in the Community Room.
Summer events: Events will be offered at the library throughout the summer. The fun starts Tuesday, June 24, with a Parkour (Freerunning) workshop and continues with crafts, science experiments and movies.
Holiday craft making: Kids from ages preschool to grade 5 are invited to make a Mother’s Day craft Thursday, May 8, from 3:30 to 4 p.m.

Lego Club: Preschoolers to grade 5 kids are invited to use their imagination creating Lego buildings, vehicles and more on Fridays, April 25 and May 23, at 3:30 p.m. in the community room. All ages are welcome. Please register online or at the library.
Friends sought: Manville Public Library is looking for community members who would like to join the Friends of the Manville Library Committee.
This committee will promote the library’s programs and collections, raise funds for special library projects and encouraging a lifelong love of reading and learning. Call Barbara Forbes at 908-722-9722.
Schedule: Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Chess classes: The library offers free classes for all ages. Call Henry at 908-458-5324 to schedule a class. All are welcome. Register on line or at the library.
Crochet Club: Join the club from 6-7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, in the Community Room. Experienced or not, you will be welcomed. Bring your own needles and yarn.
