SENIOR CORNER: April 24

By Geraldine Klimowich
The Manville Senior Citizens meet at noon on the second Thursday of each month at the VFW on Washington Avenue.
The next regular meeting will be today, Thursday, May 8. Changes to the by-laws will be presented for review and adoption.
Tickets for the picnic will be on sale at the May and June meetings. The picnic will be at Colonial Park on Thursday, July 10.
Brie Harris and Lori Poptinka from the New Jersey State Department of the Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Division attended the April meeting. Brie Harris explained how to research for unclaimed property (banks accounts, stocks, insurance benefits, etc.) on your computer. She also advised to check the newspapers as the department lists names of unclaimed property owners twice a year.
The girls were able to check out for the members if any of them had unclaimed property and tell them what it was and the amount. Much to our surprise there were quite a few. They were given claim forms and instructions for follow-up.
The Manville Senior Citizen Prom hosted by the Manville High SchoolKey Club, Manville Municipal Alliance and Manville Recreation was held on Friday, April 11. Thank you to the sponsors and students for a memorable time. Good food and music supplied by DJ Bill Forke from SparxDJ rounded out the evening.
The students showed us their dance moves and we gave our best ones. There was a lot of student and senior dancing interaction. Nick and Marilyn Trilone were crowned King and Queen. A special treat for the women, courtesy of Patty Osgood, were bouquets of tulips.
Reminder: The Manville Weston Causeway will be closed from four to six months as the bridge over the canal is being replaced.
Residents of Manville age 50 and older are eligible for membership. Also, persons who do not remain residents of Manville are still eligible for membership. Dues for new members are $20, which includes 2014 dues and registration.
Recreation department programs for seniors — senior chair aerobics, Zumba gold and leg strengthening class — have begun. You can register at the recreation office or the Manville Senior Center.
Nick Trilone is accepting 2014 dues of $10 for members. Dues for 2014 must be paid by Feb. 13.
Canned goods or nonperishable food items will continue to be collected before each meeting. Remember to bring one item per member to stock the Food Bank.
Blood pressure screening is held before the beginning of each meeting for members, starting at 11:30 a.m.
The Executive Board will continue to hold their meetings on the Thursday prior to the regular meeting.
