South Brunswick Police arrested a man Friday afternoon for allegedly having a gun in the parking lot of the Target store on Route 1.
Police charged driver Brandon Gill, 25, of Jacksonville, Florida for unlawful possession of a firearm, police said.
According to police, at 3 p.m., Target security reported a suspicious vehicle that had been parked in the lot for several hours with one person sitting in it.
Officer Wiiliam Bonura Jr., reportedly observed a black Subaru in the rear of the parking lot with its engine running.
He approached the driver, Mr. Gill, and began to question him, police said.
According to police, Mr. Gill appeared nervous as he explained he had visited friends in New York City and was returning to Florida when he stopped in the parking lot.
As officers spoke with Mr. Gill he admitted to having a handgun in his possession, police said.
Police recovered a Beretta 380 handgun with 13 hollow point bullets.
In addition a second magazine with 13 hollow point bullets, a collapsible metal baton, and a curved bladed knife with a circular grip handle were recovered from the vehicle, police said.
Mr. Gill was charged with unlawful possession of weapons and possession of prohibited weapons.
His bail was set at $10,000 and he was lodged in the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick, according to police.
