EDITORIAL: A champ for abused kids

Who knew Yankees legend Joe Torre was the victim of domestic violence as a youth, with an abusive father?
Womanspace Inc., with a mission to prevent abuse, protect families and change lives by providing a safety net, clearly did.
This week they presented him with the Barbara Boggs Sigmund Award for his work with his own organization that mirrors that mission, the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation.
He is the first man in 20 years to receive that honor.
And it sounds like he deserves it.
His mantra is “if you want to stop the cycle of domestic violence, you have to do a lot of educating.”
And that’s what led to the creation of the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation.
He said the foundation has programs to help children in schools and community centers in New York, New Jersey and California.
His success in professional baseball is legendary. We can only hope he is equally successful in fighting domestic violence.
