WEST WINDSOR — The township has received two grants totaling $475,000 that will help make traveling through town easier.
The first grant, in the amount of $250,000, comes from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT)’s Fiscal Year 2014 Municipal Aid Program. The township sought the grant funds for the Alexander Road Reconstruction project.
The letter from NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson states that each year the program becomes more popular and competitive statewide. This year the state received 653 applications for more than $255 million. Only $78.75 million was available from the Transportation Trust Fund (TTF).
The township identified the need for improvements to the easterly half section of Alexander Road, from the center line to the curb line, between Vaughn Drive and Roszel Road.
Additionally, the Christie Administration announced Friday that 71 applications totaling $22.6 million in grants were received for the NJDOT’s Bikeway program.
West Windsor Township is one of only four municipalities to be awarded a Bikeway grant in the amount of $225,000 for the Conover Road Bikeway Project.
The township has continuously demonstrated its commitment for improved bicycle and pedestrian facilities within the community and the proposed improvements will create a dedicated off-road bikeway along Conover Road between South Post Road and Galston Drive. In addition to bicycle use, this route may be used by rowers from nearby Caspersen Rowing Center in Mercer County Park, as well as by the West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South Cross Country team.
Mayor Hsueh said, "The awarded grants are another example of the ongoing cooperation between the township and the state for the improvement of our local transportation network and implementation of the Complete Street Policy. We will continue to participate in all available programs to improve and protect West Windsor as well as save taxpayers money."
