Gardeners’ questions answered by master
Thurs., May 15 — Master Gardener Marylin Hulme will lead a discussion based on previously submitted gardening questions at the Neshanic Garden Club’s monthly meeting at 11 a.m. at the Station House on Olive Street, Neshanic Station. This will be followed by a plant auction. The club meeting begins at 9:45.
Library organizes book festival for kids
Sat., May 17 — More than 20 authors and illustrators of books for children through young adults will appear at the first Hillsborough Public Library’s Children’s Book Festival on from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
There will be readings and presentations by authors, and books will be available for sale and signing. Discounts will be given to patrons with library cards. Proceeds from sales will support library activities and improvements.
Authors scheduled to attend are Monica Wellington, Artie Bennett, Ana Lomba and Kit Grindstaff.
Soccer Club to hold tryouts for competitive travel teams
Sats., May 17 — The Hillsborough Soccer Club is hosting tryouts for its competitive travel soccer teams at the Country Classics Fields on Amsterdam Drive.
Tryouts are for the fall 2014/spring 2015 season. Tryout times are by age group and the full schedule can be found on the website www.hillsboroughsoccerclub.org.
The club offers a fun, competitive soccer environment and professional coaching for boys and girls ages 8 – 17.
The club also offers a non-competitive development program for boys and girls ages 5 to 8 that places an emphasis on soccer basics.
Boys and girls interested in trying out (including current players) must register online at www.hillsboroughsoccerclub.org prior to attending tryouts. Registration is free.
1,200 expected to gain RVCC degrees, certificates
Sat., May 17 — Ralph Izzo, who is chairman, president and chief executive officer of Public Service Enterprise Group, will deliver the commencement address at Raritan Valley Community College’s 45th annual spring commencement at 10 a.m. on the soccer field of the college on Lamington Road, Branchburg. More than 1,200 students are expected to be awarded associate degrees or certificates.
Flea market benefits  fire company auxiliary
Sat., May 17 — Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Company No. 2 Fire Auxiliary will hold a flea market at 375 Route 206, next to Hillsborough Radiology and across from TD Bank. The markets are outside, behind the firehouse, in the upper parking lot off Hamilton Road. No parking at Hillsborough Radiology.

Handbell concert to fight river blindness
Sun., May 18 — Handbell artist Hyosang Park will use play to raise money to heal people in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She and pianist Akiko Hosaki will perform a benefit concert for the United Front Against Riverblindness, a parasitic disease transmitted by black flies, at 5 p.m. at Hillsborough Reformed Church at Millstone, on the corner of Amwell Road and Route 533. The program includes the works of J.S. Bach, Grieg and Massenet, and hymns and folk tunes. Suggested admission is $10. 908-359-3391.
Veterans: Save date for holiday breakfast
Sat., May 24 — Hillsborough veterans and widows of veterans are encouraged to mark for the township’s annual Salute to Veterans breakfast, followed by the holiday parade and Garden of Honor commemoration program.
Non-profit groups that wish to march in the parade are invited to sign up online through the Parks and Recreation website.
‘Brave Billy’ benefits from family BBQ day
Sun., June 1 — A barbecue for ill toddler Billy Biviano of Millstone will be held at a family day Central Jersey Nurseries on Hamilton Road from noon to 3 p.m. A DJ will provide music. A Catered Affair will provide the food. Cost is $15 for the fundraiser.
Firefighters raise money with golf outing
Mon., June 2 — Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Company No. 3 will hold its 15th annual golf outing on at Royce Brook Golf Club in Hillsborough. Local businesses are asked to consider becoming a sponsor and golfers are invited to play in the fundraiser for the fire company. Golf outing chairman is Sam Rozycki at 609-610-4180.
Church sponsors  chicken dinner, bake sale
Sat., June 7 — A chicken marsala or francaise dinner and bake sale will be held at the South Branch Reformed Church, 870 River Road, 4:30-7 p.m. Adults $14, children 6-10 $6, and children 5 and under free. Garden club will tour Grounds for Sculpture
Thursday, June 12 — The Neshanic Garden Club will hold its annual meeting at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton Township at 10 a.m. The goup will tour the grounds, and follow by installing officers. Lunch will be at the Rats Restaurant in the park. Fee for lunch and tour will be $36; payment is due by June 10. For information, contact club president Barbara Zielsdorff at 908-359-1750.
Royce Brook hosts GOP golf outing
Fri., July 11 — The Hillsborough Republican Election Committee will hold a golf outing at Royce Brook Golf Club, 201 Hamilton Road. A donation of $200 gives greens feees, cart, beverage cart, lunch, dinner and one hour of popen bar with dinner. Credit cards accepted. 1 p.m. shotgun start.
