I was very impressed with your article, “Community Players Find Second Home in Theater” (Suburban, May 29). To add another facet, children definitely have a place in community theater.
Three of my grandchildren are very active in theater arts. They have all participated in musicals and plays at Playhouse 22, East Brunswick; The Villagers, Somerset section of Franklin; Main Street Theatre Company, Sayreville; Marlboro Players; and Plays-in-the-Park, Edison. They have a lot of fun, but in the process, they learn the “art” of taking direction, cooperation, responsibility and working with adults.
As stated in the article, it most often takes two or three months to put together a show. If it’s a musical, there’s learning dialogue, music, lyrics and sometimes choreography. You have to be focused and responsible, all while maintaining good grades at school. The parents also are to be commended for giving up so much of their time, as are the adult actors, directors, producers, musicians, costumers and stage managers.
I am very proud of my grandchildren and all the other young actors who give us such magical moments in the theater.
