Say what one can say about New Jersey, good or bad, but last week’s hosting of the Special Olympics 2014 can be summed up in one word: spectacular!
From the largest volunteer civilian airlift of athletes and their families, to the coordination of staff, resources and public/private operations . . . New Jersey’s finest moments were showcased last week.
If you had the pleasure of watching the enthusiasm and determination of these fine athletes, you got to experience what teamwork and sportsmanship are all about.
My wife and I had the pleasure of seeing New jersey’s volleyball and basketball Olympic teams take the Gold at Rider University’s recreation center and gymnasium. There we met a Special Olympics senior manager from Texas, and asked her how she thought the games were going. Her response warmed our hearts as she said that the area’s sports facilities, transportation, displays, volunteers and spectators made this one of the best Olympics she has ever attended.
Our son and some of his Lawrence High School alums volunteered along with thousands of other New Jersey and Pennsylvania residents to make this a most memorable experience.
The Special Olympic athletes came with great hopes, goals and aspirations. They competed admirably and displayed the best attributes of respectful competition. When they, their families and their coaches and staff left, one be sure that they took back with them what they also left for New Jersey . . . wonderful memories.
