rookdale Community College will offer a sports broadcasting course beginning this fall, becoming the first community college in New Jersey to do so.
The course will feature hands-on training in audio and video production, with opportunities to work with Brookdale’s nationally ranked sports teams, Brookdale TV and Brookdale’s public radio station, 90.5 The Night.
“Broadcasting is a highly popular career track, but one that requires a great deal of practical knowledge and experience,” said Dr. Dianna Phillips, executive vice president of educational services at Brookdale, in a press release. “Brookdale is unique in that it has the faculty, staff and resources to provide that level of practical experience right here on campus.”
Introduction to Sports Broadcasting will join television production and introduction to radio in Brookdale’s media broadcasting concentration, which falls under the Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree program in Media Studies.
Students will study all aspects of sports broadcasting, including editing, production, reporting, news writing and the development of a personal style. Students will also be given guidance on careers in sports media.
Course instructors will work collaboratively with the Brookdale media network and the college athletic department to provide real-world broadcasting experience to the students, said Chad Anderson, chair of Brookdale’s Communication Media Department.
“This is a win-win,” he said. “Students will learn the technology and concepts of the billion-dollar sports media entertainment industry and work alongside a successful team of media and athletic staff. We get to involve our students with Brookdale Television and Brookdale Radio, and support the amazing teams in our athletic program. We are all very excited for the fall semester.”
