A teacher of special education at North Brunswick Township High School has pleaded guilty to a charge of engaging in an inappropriate Internet conversation with a 14-year-old male student.
Cara E. Conroy, 33, of the Kendall Park section of South Brunswick, admitted to a count of endangering the welfare of the child on June 27, saying she engaged in a sexually explicit conversation with the student on March 5, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey.
Conroy was charged on March 6 following an investigation by Investigator Melissa Terpanick of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and Detective Mike Braun of the North Brunswick Police Department, after the boy’s mother contacted authorities.
The student was not in the special education program, officials said.
Conroy, who began working for the North Brunswick Board of Education in September 2005, was suspended without pay following the charges.
The guilty plea was entered during a hearing last week in New Brunswick before Superior Court Judge Joseph Paone.
Under the terms of the plea agreement. which was reached with Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Christine D’Elia, Conroy will be placed under parole supervision for life and will be required to register as a Megan’s Law sex offender.
She also will surrender her teaching license and will be forever banned from holding a public job in New Jersey, according to the press release.
Conroy’s sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 5.
