Winners have been named in an essay contest that will give charitable donations and complimentary orthodontic treatment to children.
Dr. Laurene Wolf’s annual "Giving Smiles" program is an opportunity for local children and teens to be recognized for their charitable experiences.
During February, which is National Children’s Dental Health Month, children in kindergarten through 12th grade could submit a 500-word essay that describes their charitable involvement. A reception was held June 3 to announce the writers of the winning essays.
First place went to Amanda Wendt, 12, of Hillsborough, who will receive full orthodontic treatment (valued at $6,130) and a $1,000 donation for CHOP (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia).Second place was awarded to Nicole Dragoiu-Luca, 12, from Bridgewater, who was honored with a $750 donation to Adopt One Village.
Third place was won by Gabriel Fabiano, 12, of Bridgewater, who was given a $500 donation for Boy Scout Troop 84.
Margaret VonSchilling, one of the judges and a teacher in Montgomery school district, attended the event and praised the students for being leaders. She also charged them to get others involved in community service and volunteering.
Dr. Wolf said this program was established to recognize young people who are giving back to the community. The essays discussed large-scale projects and small acts of kindness and charity. A main goal of the program is to inspire others to get involved and give back to the community, as these young people have done.
