Children’s programs set at Metuchen library

Children’s STEM programs, sponsored by the Friends of the Metuchen Library, will be offered at the Metuchen Public Library, 480 Middlesex Ave., Metuchen. The programs include:

 Traveling Turtles, 11 a.m.-noon July 12. With instructors from the Wetlands Institute, children age 5 and up can investigate turtles and their anatomy, behaviors, adaptations and more.

 All About Butterflies, 2-3 p.m. July 26, for ages 5 and up. Rick Mikula, a butterfly habitat consultant, will share his knowledge, and his butterfly exhibit.

 Balls and Tracks, 7-8 p.m. July 17. Children in grades 3-7 can learn what forces of science help a roller coaster on track or ski jumpers become champions in this interactive, hands-on program conducted by instructors from the Liberty Science Center.

 Phun with Physics, 2-3 p.m. Aug. 9. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade can learn physics concepts through fun demonstrations and hands-on activities. The program is conducted by David Maiullo, physics support specialist at Rutgers University.

 Fibonacci’s Math Club, 4-5:15 p.m. July 3 and 10, and 6:30-7:45 p.m. July 31 and Aug. 7, for children in grades 2-4. The program is designed to foster a love of math and improve problem-solving and critical-thinking skills with games and activities.

 Inventing with Junk, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 21 and 28, for children in grades 3-8. Ted Latham, a retired educator with a deep knowledge of science and technology, will illustrate the wonders one can do with a pile of junk.

The programs are offered through funding from The Lemelson Foundation and are open only to Metuchen residents. If space permits, programs will open to others one week prior to the event. Registration is required by calling 732-632-8526, ext. 8532.
