ROBBINSVILLE: Scott helps East to Sunshine Football Classic win

By Bob Nuse, The Packet Group
EWING — Chad Scott was happy to get one more opportunity to represent Robbinsville High School on the football field.
Picking up a win and scoring a touchdown turned out to be an added bonus.
”It was intense and it was fun at the same time,” said Scott, who was part of the East team that defeated the West, 14-7, in the Sunshine Football Classic last week at The College of New Jersey. “I really enjoyed myself. Playing with this group of guys really motivated me to do my part so that we would come out with a ‘W’ and we did. I thought everyone did well. The defense did a great job and the offensive line did a great job. We were able to run the ball really well tonight.”
Scott was joined on the East team by fellow Robbinsville graduate Darron Daniels, who played receiver, as well as Jim Roselli of Allentown, who played on the offensive line.
Scott gave the East an early lead when he scored on a 5-yard run late in the first quarter. The West tied the game in the second quarter, but the East scored the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter and held on for the victory. Getting the win was nice, but the week was more about getting back together with players on the football field and having a good time.
”We all really connected,” said Scott, who will be attending Rowan University, where he is slated to play running back. “We had a good bond. We scrimmaged each other a little and that helped us out a lot and got us ready for the game. The offense did its part and the defense did its part.
”Winning was a big part because I think a lot of people underestimated us. The West team was favored to win so when we knew we had them we just got really excited about it.”
Scott is one of the players who will be continuing his football career in college, although not everyone involved in the game will be playing at the next level. But because he has been working out since the end of the high school season, he was prepared and ready to go last week.
”Since the football season ended, I have taken maybe two or three weeks off,” Scott said. “I have been working out. I go to John Nicola’s (Nicola Performance Training) in East Windsor and that really prepared me a lot. I put on some weight and also got quicker and faster as well.”
All in all it was a great week for Scott and the rest of the players who had a chance to take part in the game. And he was happy to have a former Raven teammate along with him.
”I was originally going to be by myself and then (Daniels) got the email about joining the game and I was really excited about having him out here and playing in the game with me,” Scott said.
The game was the 18th annual Sunshine Classic, which has been held annually at TCNJ and now splits players from Mercer County and some other area high schools into an East and a West squad.
The attendance was over 3,000 and all proceeds go to support the Sunshine Foundation, which is a non-profit organization that looks to make a difference for children whose families are under financial strain due to the child’s illness and bring a ray of “Sunshine” into their lives.
