Kevin Leftwich, 54, of Trenton, was charged with burglary and theft for allegedly taking a digital camera and $139 in cash from several dorm rooms at The Lawrenceville School, according to police Lt. Joseph Amodio.
The Police Department received a report from the school at 9:06 a.m. July 10 that Mr. Leftwich was on school property after he had been told to stay away, Lt. Amodio said. Police were sent to the school, but could not find Mr. Leftwich.
Around 3 p.m., an off-duty officer called the department to report he had seen Mr. Leftwich in the area of the Lukoil gas station on Texas Avenue and Brunswick Pike. He was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant, and police found a digital camera and cash in his possession, Lt. Amodio said.
While police were in the process of arresting Mr. Leftwich, the Police Department began to receive telephone calls from The Lawrenceville School, reporting numerous break-ins. Police tracked down the owner of the camera, who was staying at a dorm on campus. Further investigation revealed that Mr. Leftwich had entered several dorm rooms and took money, Lt. Amodio said.
Mr. Leftwich was taken to the Mercer County Corrections Center on $75,400 bail, with no 10-percent option.
