A 73-year-old Hillsborough man was the pilot of a small, home-built plane that crashed in a wooded, swampy area off Sunnymead Road in Hillsborough at about 10:15 a.m. Wednesday.
The pilot was reportedly practicing takeoffs from the Central Jersey Airport on the Hillsborough-Manville border.
Field reports said the pilot — apparently the only victim — was barely moving when extricated. He was identified as Victor Holmlund of Hillsborough.
The State Police Medevac helicopter was en route before Mr. Holmlund was taken by the Hillsborough Rescue Squad to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick.
Rescue departments’ four-wheel vehicles were dispatched.
The township police, the county prosecutor’s office, Federal Aviation Administration and the state Department of Environmental Protection’s aeronautics section are investigating the crash.
Responders were township fire units, the township Office of Emergency Management and the Somerset County Hazardous Materials team.
