Future Red Bank Catholic (RBC) High School baseball players are developing their skills during the summer as members of RBC’s junior team, which is competing in the Greater Middlesex Coaches Summer Baseball League.
The young Caseys are hovering around the .500 mark, but coach Newt Hausmann is less concerned about his team’s record than he is about helping the players improve their skills.
“We have a lot of kids who are interested in playing for the varsity one day,” the coach said. “So I usually bat everyone who is there and make sure everyone gets a few innings in the field. It’s important that they all get a chance. They’re the future of the RBC program.”
Hausmann also juggles his pitching staff, often using three or four hurlers per game.
“It’s not all about having one guy go out and go seven innings,” he added. “We want to get a look at all of them, and we don’t want to overuse any of them.”
RBC’s top pitchers this summer include Steve Turk, Austin Nappi, Mike Connolly and Tom Clark. The staff also includes Blaze Danzini, Aiden Supp, Tom Selven and Joe Ianelli; and three left-handers in Brenden Dente, Dan Ianelli and Shawn Golden. Eddie Barnwell and Jonathan Beal have handled the bulk of the work behind the plate.
Clark, Dente, Dan Ianelli and Jack Forsman have been splitting time at first base, with Turk, Danzini and Forsman seeing time at second base. Supp is the shortstop, while Connolly usually plays third base.
Beal, Golden, Selven, Joe Ianelli, Chris Lucia, Nick Merlo, Vince Renna, Rob Goehring and Max Hazard are the outfielders.
Hausmann, whose son, Buddy, is RBC’s varsity head coach, has been leading the Caseys’ junior team for the past four seasons. The senior Hausmann was a longtime fixture in the Colts Neck Sports Foundation, where he coached baseball, basketball and soccer.
“Buddy asked me to help out, and it’s been a lot of fun,” he said. “I enjoy working with young athletes, and I’m glad to be coaching again.”
Newt Hausmann is being assisted this summer by former RBC standout Ryan Slate.
