One victim being taken to hospital
A 73-year-old Hillsborough man was the pilot of a small, home-built plane that crashed in a swampy, wooded area off Sunnymead Road in Hillsborough.
The pilot was reportedly practicing takeoffs from the Central Jersey Airport on the Hillsborough-Manville border.
Field reports said the pilot — apparently the only victim — was barely moving when extricated. He was identified as Victor Holmlund of Hillsborough.
The State Police Medevac helicopter was en route before the decisaion was made for the Hilsborough Rescue Squad to take Mr. Holmlund to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick.
The township police, the county prosecutor’s office, Federal Aviation Administration and the state Department of Environmental Protection’s aeronautics section are investigating the crash.
Responders were township fire units, the township Office of Emergency Management and the Somerset County Hazardous Materials team.
