HILLSBOROUGH: Teen boy charged with reckless manslaughter

Police have taken a Hillsborough 16-year-old teen into custody following the death of another teen whom the accused allegedly had punched in the head in a fight two days earlier.
The accused, identified only by the initials S.M., was charged with reckless manslaughter in the second degree and has been lodged at the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center.
On Saturday, July 26, at about 5 p.m., Hillsborough Township Police responded to a medical call on Orchard Drive, according to Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey Soriano.
Responding officers and emergency medical technicians were directed to Jared Colon, 17, who was suffering from a head injury. He was airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for emergency medical treatment.
Detectives from the Hillsborough Township Police Department and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit came to the scene to start the investigation, which concluded that Jared Colon’s injury was the result of being punched in the head while engaged in a verbal argument with S.M.
On July 28, Robert Wood Johnson medical staff told detectives that Jared Colon had died.
