National Night Out planned for Aug. 5

North Brunswick will observe National Night Out with a free community event 5:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at police headquarters, 710 Hermann Road, North Brunswick.

Members of the North Brunswick Police Department, Office of Emergency Management, Fire Department and Rescue Squad will display equipment, and civic and community organizations will be represented.

Information on neighborhood safety and township organizations will be coupled with a bounce house, face painting, tattoos, music and refreshments.

The event is sponsored by the North Brunswick Municipal Alliance.

Rush Holt schedules community office hours

U.S. Rep. Rush Holt (D-12) will hold Community Office Hours 5-7 p.m. Aug. 19 at the North Brunswick Municipal Building, 710 Hermann Road.

Holt or members of his staff will be available to assist residents who are having problems with Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Department of Veterans Affairs, U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services or any other federal agency.

Staff members will also be available to provide information on federal grants and contracts, acquiring flags flown over the U.S. Capitol and more.

Freshman orientation slated for high school

North Brunswick Township High School, Raider Road, will hold student/parent orientation for incoming freshmen 6:30 -8:30 p.m. Aug. 26.

Barnes & Noble holds writing competition

Barnes & Noble, 869 Route 1 South, North Brunswick, has announced that it will sponsor a creative writing contest for those ages 12-17.

Participants are invited to submit one piece of writing in any style — short story, poetry or essay — by Aug. 8 to the store. All entries must be typewritten and may be no longer than three pages double-spaced. Only one entry per person may be submitted.

Prizes will include a $50 gift card and recognition at a special event at the end of the summer.

Monthly birthday lunch set for Aug. 26

The South Brunswick Senior Center will hold its monthly birthday luncheon at 11 a.m. Aug. 26.

To sign up, call 732-329-4000, ext. 7670 by Aug. 19. Games and trivia will be followed by lunch and birthday cake.

This event is open to residents age 55 and older.

Local teacher to sing in Montclair concert

Elizabeth Perryman, a music teacher at Judd Elementary School in North Brunswick, will take part in “A Tour of Nineteenth Century Opera with David and the Divas” at 7 p.m. Aug. 6 at the First Lutheran Church, 153 Park St., Montclair.

Sopranos Perryman and Genya Muzyczka will join David Maiullo on the piano.

The suggested donation is $20 for adults.

Vendors needed for fall flea market, bake sale

The St. Anne’s Society of St. Mary of Mount Virgin Church, 198 Sanford St., on the corner of Remsen Avenue, New Brunswick, will hold a fall flea market and bake sale 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 14.

Support group for caregivers available

SAMHAJ (South Asian Mental Health Awareness of Jersey) will hold a caregiver support group meeting 7-9 p.m. Aug. 7 at the NAMI NJ office, 1562 Route 130, North Brunswick.
