MANVILLE: Car hit and damaged bridge, caller tells police

Police blotter, July 23-27

At 6:54 a.m. July 23 a caller said he had just seen a Honda Civic hit a guardrail on the Van Veghten Bride on North Main Street — damaging the auto — and then drive away. The caller wanted to report the damage.
— A Knopf Street caller at 10:10 a.m. July 23 reported his vehicle’s driver’s side tires were slashed in the overnight hours when the car was parked on the street.
— A green Subaru driven by an older man hit the side of the Manville Closet store on South Main Street, a caller reported at 4:30 p.m. July 23. Patrolman Christopher Morrison stopped a vehicle that matched the description but found no visible damage on the car. No damage was seen to the building.
— Jose Perez, 26, of North Plainfield was charged with driving while intoxicated on the Van Veghten Bridge on North Main Street at 3:51 a.m. July 24. The car was towed.
— Officers assisted a Pope Street woman in going through about 50 pieces of fraudulent mail at 11:53 a.m. July 24.
— A Richard Avenue resident said at 9:05 p.m. Friday that he had returned home and found the back door had been broken into and a vehicle missing. The car was entered in national crime registry.
— LaCascada security at South 5th Avenue and West Camplain Road said a few minutes after midnight into Saturday that two unknown men had been fighting in the street but left before police could arrive.
— A caller said five women were trying to get into a second-floor apartment on North Weiss Street at 1:40 a.m. Saturday.
Patrols stopped a car leaving the scene. The driver, a 22-year-old Plainfield woman, said she was following a friend who lives at the apartment but denied climbing on the roof or trying to enter the apartment. The door to the apartment was secure, police said.
— Firefighter Bob Kaminski reported finding empty beer cans on the side and behind the Fire Company No. 1 building on South 3rd Avenue at 11:08 a.m. Saturday. He said it was an ongoing problem, mainly on Friday and Saturday nights.
— At noon on Sunday a man said he was assaulted on South 5th Avenue by a homeless man, whom he named to police. The man reported ran away before patrols arrived.
— A man reported appearing to be sleeping on the bushes between a closed fast-food restaurant near the intersection of Brook Boulevard and North Main Street at 12:54 p.m. Sunday was just resting in the shade, the 59-year-old told police.
— Police responded to a report of a fight with a security officer at a gate to Adesa Auto Auction on North Main Street at 9:32 p.m. Sunday. The rescue squad was called for an apparent shoulder injury to one man who was involved in the scuffle.
