MANVILLE: Police retrieve Yorkie and return it to owner

Police blotter, week of July July 28 to Aug. 3

Police followed a little black and brown Yorkie from the Weston Elementary School to Roosevelt Avenue going towards Memorial Pool, eventually gaining possession near 15th Avenue at about 12:55 p.m. July 28. The dog was returned to its Raritan Avenue owner.
— Valerie Cobb, 44, of Manville was charged with shoplifting at Wal-Mart at 3:28 p.m. July 28, and taken to Somerset County Jail in default of $1,000 bail.
— A South Main Street man found a wallet in the parking lot of Sparkle Car Wash on South Main Street at 4:55 p.m. July 28. Police tried to notify the Bound Brook owner.
— A 31-year-old Manville man stood on the train tracks on North Street near North 6th Avenue with his white shirt over his head as a train barreled down with its horn blaring at 9 a.m. July 29. The man, thin and about 5-7, stepped aside at the last second, police said. He was taken for a psychiatric evaluation.
— A 73-year-old man not breathing and unresponsive was given CPR until police and the rescue squad arrived at 9:32 a.m. July 29. He was subsequently taken to RWJ Somerset and pronounced dead at 10:15.
— A bat was removed from a Manville Avenue address at 1:16 a.m. July 30.
— John Bentz of the fire department reported that four or five small kittens were found in the road near Jasinski Avenue at 8:21 p.m. July 30. Patrols found the kittens under a shed. Animal control was notified.
— A Branchburg man reported at 8:49 p.m. July 30 that he had lost about $5,500 in cash that was in a brown Home Depot bag in the Wal-Mart parking lot on North Main Street. Patrols checked the area and notified the store of the lost property.
— A man said that Brian Nowak, without a permanent address, hit him in the face with a rock from the railroad tracks on South Street at about 9 p.m. July 30. The man was taken to Robert Wood Johnson Somerset to treat injuries. Police arrested Mr. Nowak, 29, the next night around the same time on North Main Street near the railroad overpass and charged him with simple assault. He was taken to county jail in default of $1,000 bail.
— Jorge Tavares, 28, of North Weiss Street was charged with disorderly conduct at 12:47 a.m. July 31 after a caller said a man in a white T-shirt and shorts was lifting car handles on North Arlington Street. Unable to post $1,000 bail, Mr. Tavares was taken to the county jail.
— A caller to the county communications system reported at 12:33 p.m. July 31 that it appeared a vehicle was being burgled in the Wal-Mart parking lot on North Main Street. Police found the owner had locked the keys in the car and two citizens were trying to help.
— A 2003 Toyota Highlander was listed as stolen at 1:37 p.m. July 31 after a man from Somerset said he couldn’t find it in the main Adesa Auto Auction parking lot on North Main Street.
— A Pope Street resident said a man knocked on the door and said he worked for PSE&G ran away when the resident asked questions at 3:05 p.m. July 31. Patrols located David Robinson from the Bronx, N.Y., who works for Constellation Power Corp. and was trying to reevaluate residents’ power bills. He was advised to register in borough offices as a solicitor.
— Two more representatives from the same company were told the same on South 20th Avenue at 4 p.m.
— Change was reported stolen out an unlocked vehicle on Bleecher Street at 6:15 p.m. July 31.
— The theft of a third-generation Apple iPad was reported on South 20th Avenue at 8:34 p.m. July 31.
— A Green Street man came to headquarters at 11:47 p.m. July 31 to report he had lost his black wallet containing $20 in cash near the railroad tracks in the Lost Valley area. It was put on the record.
— Lacey Township police reported at 1:05 a.m. Friday Aug. 1 having a Honda dirt bike reported stolen in Manville in 2013.
— Patrolman David Sheffrin reported an electrical fire inside a patrol vehicle at 12:25 p.m. Friday. The car was towed, and Fire Marshal Patrick Renaldi responded.
— The owner of a grey Hummer was advised at 12:41 p.m. Friday not to leave a dog unattended in the vehicle, even with a window cracked open. The dog showed no signs of distress.
— A dead rabbit was found on a Valerie Drive porch at 7:05 p.m. Friday. Somerset Regional Animal Shelter said they’d be out in the morning. Less than a half-hour later an opossum was reported in the backyard of a 15th Avenue home, and located between lattice and chain-link fences. An animal shelter employee was called to come out and ensnare the animal.
— A Green Street found a red baseball cap, a pair of red Crocs and $23 in cash in his driveway at 9:08 a.m. Sunday. Items were logged into the evidence locker.
— A Jackson Avenue man said at 10:19 a.m. Sunday he thinks there is a skunk living in a wood pile in a neighbor’s yard, and the animal was spraying his dogs. Animal control gave phone numbers for state Fish & Wildlife.
— Police responded to a call from a South 8th Avenue address about a hissing sound from an unknown location at 9:02 p.m. Sunday. There were no unusual odors in the house. Patrols checked the area and basement and didn’t hear anything.
