MONTGOMERY — Cadets from Montgomery Emergency Medical Services will host their "Lifesavers and Suds" car wash Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the squad’s building, 8 Harlingen Road, Belle Mead.
Although this is not the group’s largest fundraiser, the cadets host this event every year and organize it themselves, said EMS president John Connacher.
This year, he said, there are 12 cadets who volunteer with EMS. They are all students from Montgomery High School between 16 and 18 years old, he said.
"This is an event for the community, and we really enjoy their support for this event," Mr. Connacher said.
Between eight and nine of the cadets will go off to college in the fall, he said. The incoming class of cadets will have approximately 24 people, he said. Twenty-two of them will graduate from the Somerset County Emergency Services Training Academy in Hillsborough on Aug. 23, and two others will graduate from the Somerset County Vocational and Technical High School in Bridgewater, he said.
To become a cadet, the students had to fill out an application, complete an interview process, go through a background check and pass a CPR and EMT class, Mr. Connacher said.
Cadets are required to volunteer for 20 hours each month, typically taking shifts after school, he said. Even with this large commitment, the cadets also are active in the Montgomery High School community, he said. He said several cadets have participated in varsity sports during high school.
The car washes are free of charge, but a donation jar will be available at the event. The rain date for the event is Aug. 10.
