Lauren Pigott from Northern Burlington High School was a senior midfielder and defender for The College of New Jersey’s (Ewing) women’s lacrosse program this spring.
Listed as a health and exercise science major, she started in all 21 games and was fourth on the team in both goals scored (56) and assists (21).
The Lions had an overall record of 19-2. In the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) posted a mark of 6-0. The Lions hosted and won the NJAC Tournament with triumphs over Kean University (20-1) and Rowan University (15-3). From there, TCNJ advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament where they opened play with a 19-7 victory over Susquehanna University in a contest held in Ewing. In their next NCAA Tournament game, the Lions topped Washington & Lee University by a score of 15-7. In a NCAA Tournament quarterfinal match-up, TCNJ was defeated, 8-5, by Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Let’s take a glance at other local student-athletes who competed in collegiate sports this past spring season.
Northern Burlington High School graduate Nick Hammell was on the roster as a freshman who played attack for the Steven’s Institute of Technology’s (Hoboken) men’s lacrosse team this spring. He played in six games for Steven’s and recorded one goal and tallied two assists.
The Ducks had an overall team mark of 8-8 and they were 4-2 at home. In the Empire 8 Conference, they had a record of 5-2. Steven’s Institute of Technology (SIT) advanced to the Empire 8 Conference Championships semifinal round where they were defeated, 9-7, by Ithaca College in a game held in Ithaca, New York.
Jake DeWitt (Florence High School) and Justin Ely (Bordentown High School) were both members of TCNJ’s baseball program this past season. The latter, a senior pitcher/infielder, had a 1-0 record on the mound. He had nine at bats with three hits, including a double, a home run and a .333 batting average. He also had two RBIs and scored two runs. The former, a junior infielder, played in 16 games and started in nine of them for TCNJ. He posted six hits and scored three runs. The Lions had an overall record of 20-18.
