Let’s take a glance at local student-athletes who competed in collegiate sports this past spring season.
Amber Dietrich from Steinert High School was on the roster as a freshman outfielder for the Cabrini College (Radnor, Pennsylvania) softball team this spring. Dietrich played in 42 games and started in 40 of them for Cabrini. She led the team with a .393 batting average, 55 hits, eight home runs and 40 runs scored. Dietrich tied for the team lead with 28 RBIs and four triples.
The Cavaliers posted an overall mark of 25-18 and they were 15-5 at home. In the Colonial State Athletic Conference (CSAC), they had a 17-5 record. Cabrini advanced to the CSAC Tournament, where they reached the championship game before losing a 3-2 game to Marywood University.
Brock Podgurski and Nick Zucchero, both from Steinert High School, were on the roster for the Kean University (Union) baseball squad this past season. Zucchero a senior pitcher/first baseman had a 5-1 record on the mound, with 42 strikeouts. Zucchero also had seven hits, including a pair of doubles and scored three runs. Podgurski, a sophomore infielder had a .292 batting average. Podgurski had seven hits, including two doubles and he scored eight runs.
The Cougars had an overall mark of 35-14, with a record of 19-3 on their home field. In the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC), Kean posted a record of 12-6. Kean went 1-2 in the NJAC Tournament and then advanced to the NCAA Division III New York Regional. At the Regionals, they went 4-2 with victories over Union College, Rutgers-Camden, Farmingdale State and Amherst College. They lost to Amherst and SUNY Cortland in Regional action.
P.J. Weingartner from Steinert High School was on the roster as a freshman first baseman for the Steven’s Institute of Technology (Hoboken) baseball team this spring. Weingartner played in 20 games and had a .250 batting average, with five hits including a double. He also had seven RBIs and scored two runs.
The Ducks posted an overall record of 27-15, including a mark of 10-4 at home. In the Empire 8 Conference, SIT had a record of 6-6. At the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Tournament in Brooklyn, New York, they went 3-0. From there the Ducks advanced to the NCAA Division III New York Regional where they went 1-2 with a win over Union College and losses to Farmingdale State and Amherst College.
