MANVILLE: Wal-Mart expansion to create new jobs

By Deb Dawson, Special Writer
MANVILLE — About 85 new jobs will be available in Manville this fall when Wal-Mart’s new 34,000-square-foot expansion of the North Main Street store is completed.
The store will become a Wal-Mart Super Center offering groceries.
William Wertz, director of communications east, for Wal-Mart, said people can apply for the jobs now at a kiosk inside the store, open from 6 a.m. to midnight every day. Many positions will be filled this summer in preparation for the opening.
Applications also can be filed online at http://careers.walmart.com.
Veterans discharged within the last 12 months should apply at http://walmartcareerswithamission.com.
Mayor Angelo Corradino said two more businesses also will open and offer jobs in the near future in the same mall, the Manville Promenade. They are Popeye’s, coming next month, which is replacing Arby’s, and Retro Fitness, which has operated a temporary office to take memberships in the former Hallmark store at the end of the plaza.
The 34,000-square-foot Wal-Mart expansion will "offer our customers a full range of groceries, including fresh produce, meat, a bakery and other items. Our customers tell us that they will welcome an affordable option for all their grocery shopping needs," Mr. Wertz said.
He said there is no set date for the opening yet, but it will open sometime this fall. The store will become 167,000 square feet in size.
This will be the only supermarket in Manville. An A&P and a Foodtown both closed, the A&P doing so in 2011.
Mr. Corradino said he’s hoping the store will save residents a lot of time.
The mayor said the expansion will "appreciate the property." A renovation of the interior is planned, too, with new tile floors, an earth-tone color scheme and new checkout area.
Regarding the new jobs, Mr. Corradino said, "Any time that happens, it’s a good thing. Hopefully, they will go to residents of Manville. It will stimulate the economy. It’s a snowball effect."
He added the borough shouldn’t experience much increase in traffic because of the expansion.
