LAWRENCE: Stephen Murray selected as The Lawrenceville School headmaster

The Lawrenceville School Board of Trustees has announced that Stephen S. Murray has been named the school’s 13th headmaster, effective July 1, 2015. Murray will succeed Elizabeth A. Duffy, who has led the school since 2003.
"Steve is a world-class educator and a proven leader who comes to us with a soaring record of accomplishment at two of the nation’s most prestigious independent schools. He understands the great opportunities and complexities of leading a school like Lawrenceville – with rich traditions and a proud 204-year history – into the future," said Lawrenceville board president Tom Carter.
In his present role as headmaster of University School in Shaker Heights and Hunting Valley, Ohio, which he has held since 2005, he is responsible for the overall management of the two-campus K-12 boys’ school of 875 students and 235 faculty and staff.
Previously, from 1990-2005 Mr. Murray was at Deerfield Academy where he served as assistant headmaster, academic dean, dean of students, and as teacher, coach, and faculty resident.
While at University School he led two, year-long strategic planning efforts that resulted in comprehensive strategic plans around faculty excellence, global awareness, innovative education, and transformational improvement to teaching and learning environments.
Most recently Mr. Murray oversaw a $48 million academic facility construction project at the Upper School, a component of a $100 million comprehensive capital campaign which is nearing completion.
"I am in equal measure tremendously honored and deeply humbled to be invited to join the Lawrenceville community. I have long admired the school for its outstanding reputation, and have had the opportunity in recent years to learn first-hand of the students’ intellectual maturity and poise as well as Liz Duffy’s fine leadership in so many areas," said Mr. Murray. "I look forward to partnering with the remarkable faculty and administration and look to contribute my own energy and initiative to the strong forward momentum of this extraordinary institution. I am grateful beyond words to the Lawrenceville Board of Trustees for their vote of confidence. This is, for me and for my family, the opportunity of a lifetime, and I could not be more excited."
Mr. Murray received a B.A. in French and political science with honors in 1985 from Williams College, an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1987, an M.A. in French literature from the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 1990, and is a 1981 graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy.
He is married to Sarah Aldrich Murray, who he met at Phillips Exeter, and they have five children; Sam (24), Maggie (21), James (19), Grace (16), and Henry (11).
