Parents and youngsters are going to have a chance to do Halloboo Math this fall in Millstone Township and Allentown.
Jenna Beth Wincek, who will be a senior at Allentown High School, is planning a Gold Award project for Girl Scout Troop 853 of Millstone Township and Allentown. The project involves holding several Halloween themed educational events known as Halloboo Math this fall.
Halloboo Math is designed to encourage parents and children to use math every day in a fun way.
At the events, Jenna Beth will collect new board games and new or gently used Halloween costumes. The games and costumes will be donated to HomeFront, a charity in Lawrenceville.
HomeFront’s mission is to end homelessness in central New Jersey by harnessing the caring, resources and expertise of the community, according to its website.
Halloboo Math will be held at Millstone Day from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 21 at Frogbridge Day Camp, Millstone Township. Expect a sampling of the full Halloboo Math experience at Millstone Day.
Halloboo Math will be offered at the Millstone Township Primary School on Oct. 24 from 6-8 p.m.
Jenna Beth said she is trying to schedule a Halloboo Math event at the Newell Elementary School in Allentown.
She said she was “very excited” in June when her Girl Scout leaders, Laura Dreifus and Jo Ann Kaba, both of Millstone, gave her project the needed approval.
The Gold Award is the highest achievement a young woman can attain in Girl Scouting.
“I was really excited when my troop leaders gave my project approval, because I knew I could start working on something that can help so many students,” Jenna Beth said. “I love math, and want everyone to see how fun it can be.”
Jenna Beth has been working with the principal at the Millstone Township Primary School, Trisha Bogusz, and at the Newell Elementary School, Kelly Huggins, to plan the events.
“They are very enthusiastic about hosting my Halloboo Math events, and they have been very helpful and supportive,” she said.
Halloboo Math brings parents and their children together.
“It is important for parents to be able to assist their children with math homework in the way the children learn it in school,” Jenna Beth said. “I have always loved math and have been a strong math student. I look forward to the opportunity to share my love of math with children. I hope the community will come out for a fun family math night.”
At Allentown High School, Jenna Beth is a member of the varsity tennis team, the Greenbirds environmental club, the Future Educators of America, the book club and the National Honor Society.
She said she is enjoying every aspect of planning her Gold Award project and anticipates completing it in January. The award is expected to be presented by the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore at a ceremony in May.
Jenna Beth’s parents, Laurie and Jim, are supportive of their daughter, who has been a Girl Scout since she was in first grade.
“I am so proud of Jenna Beth as she works toward achieving her Girl Scout Gold Award,” Laurie Wincek said. “She was able to design and implement a project that will bring families together to learn about math, help children in need and enjoy a fun evening.”
Jim Wincek said, “Jenna Beth’s Gold Award project is an excellent way for her to grow personally and professionally. She is developing organizational and time-management skills while experiencing the benefits of helping others. I am very proud of this accomplishment, and believe this experience will benefit her and the children she touches.”
