WEST AMWELL: Township OKs purchase of more land for Hewitt Park

By John Tredrea, Special Writer
Hewitt Park in West Amwell Township will become one acre larger now that the Township Committee has adopted an ordinance that authorizes the township to buy the land.
Township Clerk Lora Olsen said Friday that the Township Committee has adopted an ordinance under which the township can use $23,000 from its open space trust fund to purchase the acre from the Usimani family.
Hewitt Park is in the western section of the township, near the intersection of Hewitt and Goat Hill roads.
Like many municipalities, West Amwell created an open space trust fund for purchases such as this one.
The fund uses money from a dedicated open space tax that residents pay as part of their property tax bills.
Township officials also issued updates to Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L) customers who use electrically supported life support equipment or who depend on electrically powered private wells for their water.
JCP&L provides electricity to the township and other municipalities, including Lambertville.
JCP&L customers who use electrically operated life support equipment or depend on private well water can register their account with the company to get updates on potential interruptions to their electric service, such as weather-related outages.
JCP&L maintains a list of critical-care customers.
To be included on this list, every year customers must complete and submit an authorization form signed by their physician.
The list is used to contact customers should an outage affect their electric service for more than 24 hours.
JCP&L also has a list of homes and businesses that depend on electrically operated private wells for water.
These customers also are notified if a power outage is expected to affect their electric service for more than 24 hours, in which case they would be advised of locations where water and ice are available.
Both the critical care customer and private well customer lists are provided to county and municipal Offices of Emergency Management.
