365 Series brings live jazz to the west side

RED BANK – The 3rd Annual Count Basie 365 Cultural Series is underway at the pocket park at the corner of Dr. James Parker Boulevard and Shrewsbury Avenue. The series will continue to present live jazz concerts from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. through Sept. 19.

Count Basie 365 is a project of the borough’s Vision Committee made up of citizens appointed by the mayor and members of the Borough Council.

The series opened on Aug. 21 in celebration of the birthday of “the kid from Red Bank,” jazz legend Count Basie.

It is also dedicated to keeping the spirit of Ralph Gatta, affectionately known as Johnny Jazz, alive. Gatta, a jazz aficionado and historian, was the long-time proprietor of “Johnny’s Jazz Market” on Shrewsbury Avenue.

Performing Sept. 5 will be Valerie Adams featuring the R&B groove of the Dimensions Band. The Gambone Project is up on Sept. 12, with sultry jazz infused with R&B. For the finale on Sept. 19, Red Bank’s own Chuck Lambert will deliver the soulful sound of down-home blues.
