HILLSBOROUGH: Labor Day reminds campaigners why they run

Letter to the editor

To the editor:
Labor Day marks many things in New Jersey. It is the end of the summer season, start of school, beginning of football and soccer seasons, and the kickoff of many political campaigns.
In many homes, Labor Day is filled with barbecues, family gatherings and celebration. It’s a good time to remember why Labor Day exists in the first place. This movement was created by Paterson, New Jersey, native Matthew Maguire while working for the Central Labor Council of New York. He was tasked to create a day of demonstration and picnic for their members in recognition of the hard work their members provided on a daily basis.
In 1887, New Jersey was one of five states that passed the law that recognizes Labor Day. In 1894, Congress passed the law that recognizes Labor Day as a national holiday with its observation on the first Monday of September. Labor unions fought for fair wages, a set number of hours in a work day, payment of overtime and safe work environments which are the principles adopted into regulation by the U.S. Department of Labor and the institution of OSHA standards.
Labor Day celebrates the democratic principles that the Hillsborough Democratic ticket represents. We advocate for the economic sustainability of Hillsborough and the belief that our government should be clear and transparent with a responsibility for fiscal integrity. We fight for all working families in Hillsborough to ensure that Hillsborough has a good school system and safe neighborhoods.
As the Le/Beggiato campaign kicks off, let us remind ourselves of the reasons for Labor Day, the democratic principles of our national holiday and what it represents for Hillsborough. We will fight for our community and the families within Hillsborough because community comes first.
