MONROE — The 5th annual Green Fair is set for Oct. 11.
The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Oak Tree School.
There will be a paper shredding truck, free cycling, environmentally friendly storytimes by the library, arts and crafts and information about healthy living.
The event is co-sponsored by the Monroe Township Environmental Commission and features tours of the Oak Tree School, which was designed to LEEDS standards, has solar panels and natural light coming from 90 percent of the building through windows that are glazed with high-efficiency thermal Solarban glass.
"The library is able to bring more interactive programming to the Green Fair, and engages children in environmentally geared activities," said John Riggs, township director of planning and environmental protection. "Their partnership is invaluable and we are so happy to continue working together on such an amazing event."
The fair will again feature free cycling, where residents can bring items that are in good working condition, such as furniture, toys, lamps, tools or other items they do not need anymore, leave them at the designated site at the fair, for someone else to take home.
"The idea is to keep perfectly good items from being sent to the landfill," Mr. Riggs said. "We want to find new homes for household items still in good working order. Anything that is not taken by residents will be donated to RISE."
RISE is a nonprofit organization based out of Hightstown that provides referral and support services to area families and individuals in need. In addition, the shredding truck will be at the fair for residents to bring their sensitive documents to be securely shredded and recycled. The Green Fair will also feature fresh food from Taqueria Maria, and pony rides and a petting zoo for children.
The fair will also feature both indoor and outdoor plants for sale, a farm stand selling Jersey Fresh vegetables, hybrid vehicles on display, worm composters, and St. Peter’s hospital will be on hand to check blood pressure and cholesterol.
