A school bus that had just dropped off the last of its school-age passengers at the Lawrence Square Village townhouse development burst into flames on Quakerbridge Road at 3:44 p.m. Sept. 5, according to Chief of Police Mark Ubry.
The driver of the school bus, which is owned by Delaware Valley Bus Line Inc., was on her way back to the bus company terminal when she heard a "popping" sound and the bus lost power, Chief Ubry said. She pulled off the street into a parking lot.
She saw excessive exhaust coming from the rear of the bus, and got off to take a look. As she was looking at the exhaust, she saw flames coming from underneath the bus, Chief Ubry said. The bus burst into flames.
The fire, which appeared to have begun in the engine compartment, destroyed the bus. It melted the front tires, burned out the engine compartment and charred the interior of the bus. All of the windows on the bus were broken.
Lawrence Township firefighters extinguished the fire. Some damage was reported to the asphalt parking lot, Chief Ubry said.
