A shoplifter nearly made off with $99.90 worth of frozen shrimp from the Acme grocery store at the Lawrence Shopping Center until he literally collided with a security guard who was looking for him at 8:42 p.m. Sept. 4, according to Chief of Police Mark Ubry.
The security guard was patrolling the shopping center parking lot when he was flagged down by an Acme grocery store employee, who reported that a man on a bicycle had stolen several bags of frozen shrimp, Chief Ubry said.
The employee pointed out the man to the security guard, who followed him toward a vacant building on the opposite side of the parking lot. The security guard lost sight of the man, but as he was driving around the rear of the building, the bicyclist collided with his car.
The bicyclist fell to the ground and was bleeding from a cut to his head, Chief Ubry said. The security guard asked if he was injured. The man got up and walked off toward Brunswick Pike, leaving the bicycle and the shrimp behind.
