To the editor:
From its humble beginnings five years ago with 80 competitors, the Red, White and Bang Kids’ Triathlon has continue to grow. This year’s event showcased the competitive juices of more than 160 young triathletes who braved the day’s humidity.
When the gun signaled the start of the race, you could hear the shouts of encouragement from dozens of parents, grandparents and siblings, urging the participants to do their best.
The success of the day is a testament to the sense of community in Lawrence. The race would not have been possible if not for the support of more than 75 volunteers who gave their time on Labor Day, which is the last day of summer.
The Lawrence Township police, emergency management and Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) monitored the race and the safety of all kids.
We could not have even considered holding the triathlon if it were not for the gracious hospitality of the Lawrence Swim Association, its board and employees for hosting the race. More than two dozen sponsors provided donations of money, goods and services, with the day’s proceeds going to support the 2015 fireworks display.
You could not have asked for a more fitting end to a beautiful day than to have our last athlete, Rachel, one of our Special Olympics of New Jersey participants, turn the corner into the finisher shoot with close to 50 volunteers, athletes, parents and supporters running alongside of her, cheering her on.
Alexandre Dumas had D’Artagnan and the Three Musketeers, but the Red, White and Bang has Harper Collins, Cathy LeCompte, Dana Lynch and Dana Meth, who are the heart and soul of the race.
Thank you, Lawrence, for coming together to make for a wonderful day.
