First Aid & CPR LLC, Manalapan, is helping to make schools compliant with Janet’s Law, which requires all public and nonpublic schools to have automated external defibrillators on site.
The new law also calls for schools to establish emergency action plans to respond to sudden cardiac events, in order to be as prepared as possible to deal with life-threatening emergencies.
The law is named in memory of Janet Zilinski, an 11-year-old from Warren who died of sudden cardiac arrest after cheerleading squad practice.
For the past year, representatives of First Aid & CPR LLC have been traveling around the state training teachers and staff members in American Heart Association CPR and the use of the defibrillator.
To date, they have trained close to 1,000 teachers and more than 30 public and private schools. To schedule classes, visit www.firstaid.org, call 888-242-4259, or email [email protected].
