By Azta Baig, Special Writer
The South Brunswick Girl’s Varsity Soccer team opened up its season on Friday, Sept. 5 playing the East Brunswick Bears on the brand new turf field at South Brunswick High School.
It was an exciting moment for the players, coaches, parents, students, school administration and staff since this game was the first time a team would play an official game on the new field.
"Both the coaching staff and the players are very excited about playing on the new turf fields. They are beautiful fields and something we feel proud to call our own," South Brunswick Varsity Head Coach Beth Barrio, said. "The turf surface makes the game of soccer faster and smoother and it allows for weather to be a non-factor. The dimensions of our new field are large and it will take the players a bit of getting used to, however they are looking forward to the challenge."
"As a program we are all very glad and thankful for the turf fields," Senior soccer player Katrina Morales said. "But when it comes down to it we are always prepared to play on any surface no matter what or where it is."
South Brunswick soccer parents were happy to see their daughters finally playing on the high school turf fields.
"It’s long awaited," Mike Dimitrakis said. "They needed this sooner than later so it’s a good thing. Hope to see the Vikings win."
Another parent, Norma Stojanovski, said, "I think the turf field has been long overdue and the girls are going to have a fabulous season. Go Vikings!"
The South Brunswick Vikings were victorious over the East Brunswick Bears with a score of 1-0.
It was a terrific team effort and a great battle with a score of 0-0 at halftime.
Approximately six minutes into the second half, Senior Sunna Baig fed the ball from midfield to Freshman Damali Simon-Pointe, who was able to pass the ball to Senior Michaela Knoblock who was able to drill the ball into the net.
Less then a minute later, the referees stopped the game due to lightning and eventually ended up calling off the game.
Coach Barrio said she looks forward to a great season.
"In returning a good portion of last year’s team, we strive to remain a tough game on every team’s schedule," She said. "We want to be known as a team who plays for 80 minutes regardless of the opponent, the conditions or the game score."
In having a senior heavy roster, the Vikings look to have leadership in every facet of the game transforming the upcoming season into a successful and enjoyable one.
The South Brunswick Girl’s Soccer team is scheduled to play their next home game on Tuesday, Sept. 16 against Old Bridge at 4 p.m..
