SOUTH BRUNSWICK: School marks 9/11

By Ed Birch, Special Writer
The Monmouth Junction Elementary School held its ninth annual Patriot Day and National Day of Remembrance Thursday morning, Sept. 11.
"This was the worst attack on the people and children of this nation," according to Principal Maribeth Edmunds, in addressing the students of the school. " We must remember the character of those who lost their lives and our great nation. We must go forward as one people."
After the school observed a moment of silence, the students proceeded to the front lawn for the flag raising ceremony.
Students did this in silence and respectfully.
Upon reaching the flagpole, fifth grade students from Deborah Buoncore’s class raised the American Flag accompanied by "Taps" as played by music teacher Jared Judge.
This was followed by the salute to the flag, "Pledge of Allegiance," and the students singing "The Star Spangled Banner."
This year’s invited guest was retired Staff Sgt. Buddy Thomas, a former employee of the school district and Vietnam veteran. Mr. Thomas represented our armed forces.
"The purpose of this activity was not only to mark the anniversary of this tragic event in our nation’s history but also to help students learn about the significant contribution of our nation’s first responders" said Principal Edmunds.
