One Weekend Only – An Evening of One Act Comedies at Town and Country Players

[email protected]
BUCKINGHAM – Once a year, Town and Country Players opens its stage for one weekend to outside directors. This year, Bob DeMarco, Jesse Roy, Sharon Rill-Soester, and Sheldon Bruce Zeff direct 4 different comedies in “An Evening of Comedy.” This show runs September 19, 20 and 21.
The four plays are: Detective Sketches (Trouble is Eating My Pants),” a spoof by Douglas Post; “Blind Date Inc.,” by Gerald P. Murphy; “Personal Effects,” a coming-of-age comedy by John McNamara; and a farce, “Bye, Bye, Brevoort” by Eudora Welty.
T&C uses this annual show to find new directorial talent. Not all of directors for this year’s show are new directors but they are new to T&C’s unique space.
T&C’s stage is essentially a theatre-in-the-round. Zeff says, “This type of stage uses different tricks than a proscenium stage.” The format of “An Evening of Comedy” gives the directors a chance to work out those “tricks” without the huge commitment of a full length production. Says Roy, “A one-act play really gives you the opportunity to focus and polish your directing efforts.”
This show also gives the directors a chance to take risks, and try new genres, which is exactly what Bob DeMarco did. DeMarco has, until this point, always directed dramas. “An Evening of Comedy” gave him the chance to direct a comedy. “I was sitting on this one-act play looking for a place to showcase it, and I am glad to direct it here at T&C. “
Sharon Rill-Soester, who also produces this show, says of the experience “Putting the 4 plays together was an enormous process. But overall it has been an interesting and fun experience.”
See “An Evening of Comedy” September 19 and 20 at 8:00 pm and on September 21 at 3:00 pm. Tickets are available through www.townandcountryplayers.org or by calling 1-800-838-3006.
