LAMBERTVILLE: Section of canal’s bank will be stabilized

Work that will shore up a section of the towpath along the Delaware and Raritan Canal was scheduled to be discussed at a public meeting in Lambertville Tuesday night.
The meeting was to be hosted by Lambertville Mayor David DelVecchio and representatives of the New Jersey Water Supply Authority.
Edward Buss, an engineer with the water authority, said last week that a section of the towpath, about 100 feet long and near Lilly’s restaurant at 2 Canal St., "needs to be stabilized."
Mr. Buss said the 100-foot section of the towpath "is immediately adjacent to the canal. The work that will be done will prevent this section of the towpath from sliding into the canal and will restore the site. Some of this sliding has taken place already."
Steel sheeting will be installed vertically to prevent the sliding, Mr. Buss said. The job will cost about $240,000, he said.
"We’ve received bids for the job, but the bids aren’t official yet," he said. "All the permits needed, including those from the water authority and the state Division of Parks and Forestry, are in place."
Mr. Buss said work on the towpath is expected to begin in late October or early November.
